The Equalizer

Denzel being Denzel isn’t quite enough to make this one a hit.
Denzel Washington portrays Robert McCall, a man who has left his formerly obscure life behind him to live a life of peace. But when he meets Alina, (Chloë Grace Moretz) a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, McCall feels obliged to come out of retirement and help her.
The film starts slowly, but not in a sluggish sense as the audience is given an ambiguous and mysterious character to decipher. Our hero and true villain are each involved in their separate stories and only first intersect an hour into the movie, which is pleasantly different.
Denzel plays the highly recognised and favourable Denzel role. He’s cool, calm and collected and this time well-skilled in hand-to-hand combat. While Marton Csokas (Noah) as the Russian mobster, “Teddy” serves up a powerful performance by being just as unflustered as his counterpart. Teddy is professional, shrewd and brings an air of authority. The only difference is his brazen lust for more power and control.
McCall’s mysterious tone is heightened as we have little knowledge of his background or the birth of his hidden skills. As an audience, this is frustrating to watch. At times the brash, dramatic and cartoon-esque score between scenes puzzles. It inconveniently belies the films serious nature and generates a more comical tone.
It’s an action-thriller and director Fuqua (Training Day) shows off his competence in delivering powerful cinematography. Things blow up nicely as you would expect, but that’s not the only thumbs up. The authentic shadows and even the slow drops of rain dripping from faces reinforces the mysterious and grave tone. Overall however, The Equalizer is just too damn dull to get our hearts racing.
Satisfied, nothing more, nothing less: 6/10
Need to get round to watching this!
